Motability Car Scheme
The Motability Scheme is a unique initiative that helps disabled people and their families enjoy greater freedom and independence. By exchanging their higher rate mobility allowance, customers can lease a brand new car, scooter, or powered wheelchair with insurance, servicing, and breakdown cover all included in one simple package.

Eligibility Requirements
You may be eligible for the Motability Scheme if you receive one of the following allowances with at least 12 months remaining:
- Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
Vehicle Adaptations - Making Your Car Work for You
Good news - many adaptations are subsidised through the Motability Scheme! The scheme provides up to £6,000 towards the cost of adaptations to help make your vehicle suitable for your specific needs. This can include:
- Hand controls for acceleration and braking
- Left foot accelerator pedals
- Wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs)
- Swivel seats and transfer plates
- Steering aids and spinner knobs
- Electronic signalling devices
- Parking sensors and reversing cameras
- Hoists and ramps for wheelchair storage
If your required adaptations cost more than the £6,000 allowance, you only pay the difference. Some simple adaptations may be provided at no extra cost.
How the Scheme Works
The process is straightforward:
- Choose your vehicle from over 600 cars, SUVs, and wheelchair accessible vehicles
- Some vehicles require an Advance Payment (typically £0-£2,000)
- Your mobility allowance covers the lease, insurance, and maintenance
- At the end of your lease (usually 3 years), simply return the vehicle and choose a new one
- There's no mileage charge if you stay within the agreed allowance
