Which options should you discuss?

Push/pull controls and electronic accelerator systems, including accelerator rings, offer different ways to control a vehicle. Ask to see the movement, effort and reach required by each system. A steering aid or secondary controls may also be relevant to the complete driving setup.

Start with the movements you can comfortably and reliably make, rather than choosing from a photograph. A driving assessment can help establish which controls and training are appropriate.

Can hand controls be fitted to my car?

Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact make, model, year, transmission and specification. Provide the registration and details of any existing adaptations. An installation that works in one model should not be assumed to fit another.

Discuss seating position, leg clearance, steering adjustment and access to the original controls. Ask whether the vehicle will also be driven by someone who does not use the adaptation.

What should I ask before fitting?

Give the installer enough information to check both the vehicle and the intended driving setup.

• What assessment or familiarisation is needed before deciding?
• Which controls are compatible with this exact vehicle?
• Can the controls be demonstrated before ordering?
• What does the quotation include, and what work is required?
• What are the arrangements for handover, servicing and future vehicle changes?

How much will hand controls cost?

There is no single price that covers every control and installation. Request a written quotation for the selected equipment and exact vehicle. It should identify fitting, any additional controls and any collection or delivery charges.

If the vehicle is supplied through Motability, confirm the current adaptation options and charges for that order with the team. Do not assume that every adaptation or change to an existing vehicle is included.
